The
ancient Greek city of Miletus in Asia Minor, on what is now the
west coast of Turkey, has been called the birthplace of the
modern world. Home of Thales, the “father of philosophy,” and
his followers Anaximander and Anaximenes, Miletus was the
intellectual and commercial capital of the Greek world in the
century before Athens rose to prominence. These pages discuss
the origins and early history of coinage and describe a small
collection of ancient Greek and Roman coins from Miletus and
nearby areas. |

ago the Soke plain was the sea and the Bafa Lake was a bay.
Miletos, Priene and Didyma, some of the most beautiful cities of
the ancient times were located on this coast. The Maindros, with
the alluviums it carried, blocked first the sea in front of
Priene and then the whole area coverin the Miletos and Lade
island as seen in the Picture below. In the same period Ephesos
was on the coast and in time it acquired the current location |
